Founded in 1935, the Quebec political party embodied by its leader MAURICE DUPLESSIS, took power for the first time from 1936 to 1939. Returning to power in 1944, he ruled Quebec without interruption until 1960. This period will be called "La grande noirceur ".
With a conservative and nationalist ideology, marked by a strong social conservatism, the program of the Union Nationale highlights the rural, traditional, Catholic and French-speaking aspect of Quebec.
The party disappeared in 1989.
