This medal honors Jean Joseph Herman Richir (1866-1942), born in the commune of Ixelles, for the second prize in the 1886 painting competition behind Constant Montald.
A painter and poster artist of the academic painting movement, J.J. H. Richir produced a considerable body of work and was recognized among European high society of the time.
His paintings can now be found in several major museums, including those in Brussels, Barcelona, Budapest, Sydney, Seattle, etc.
