This medal honors Jean Joseph Herman Richir (1866-1942), a native of the commune of Ixelles, for second prize in the painting competition of 1886 behind Constant Montald.
Painter and poster artist of the academic painting movement, J.J. H. Richir produced a considerable body of work and was recognized among the European high society of the time.
His paintings can now be found in several major museums including, among others, those of Brussels, Barcelona, Budapest, Sydney, Seattle etc.
