Created in 1937 by Father Charles-Émile Gadbois, the éditions de la bonne chanson distributed French songs and folklore in Quebec in order to counter the ever-growing popularity of American songs.
All the lyrics and melodies of the editions of the good song were of Catholic inspiration and aimed to promote family values.
The good song was on the curriculum of all Quebec primary schools.
