Sam Browne leather belt, probably from the Canadian army in the 1950s.
The Sam Browne belt is worn by officers and warrant officers first class on ceremonial occasions.
The invention of this belt is attributed to General Sir Samuel James Browne, an officer in the 19th-century British Indian Army, who lost his left arm due to a sword cut during the Sepoy Rebellion. The lack of a left hand to stabilize his scabbard made it difficult for him to draw his sword.
He designed an additional belt that attached to the waist belt by going over the shoulder to stabilize the scabbard. This belt eventually became an integral part of a standard uniform.
The belt can be worn without the shoulder belt.
