According to the review on BABELIO...
"It seems that François Mauriac poured the best of his art into this cruel portrayal of a family of minor gentry in the Southwest whose heir, a poor, degenerate man, made a misalliance by marrying a young woman who could not resist the desire to leave her bourgeois background and become a baroness. From this ill-matched union was born a son, Guillou. We follow the ordeal of this child, so physically disfigured, so dirty, so backward that his mother calls him only "the Swine." We will also see him perhaps very close to salvation because someone, the village schoolteacher, treats him as a human being. A victim of his mother's hatred, to whom he evokes only odious memories, a victim of the village's prejudices, poor Guillou will drag his weak father into tragedy."
